Teach-In, the Dutch pop band, secured their icon status by winning 1975’s Eurovision Song Contest with “Ding-A-Dong.” This iconic win was preceded by multiple top 15 hits in the Netherlands including: “Fly Away,” “Summernight,” and “Tennessee Town” when the band performed from 1967-1980. Teach-In was the first band to win Eurovision as a first performance, in a competition that has historically favored the evening’s later acts. Several hits followed “Ding-A-Dong,” breaking chart records with: “Rose Valley” and “Upside Down.”
“Ding-A-Dong” was the chart-topping song about positive thought in 1975. The Dutch band gave sparkling performances of the song that encourages the listener to sing and find joy, even when circumstances may be bleak. In 1975, “Ding-A-Dong” had an important message. At the time, the world was watching the fall of Saigon and mourning the Vietnam war. In February, there were earthquakes that stole the lives of thousands in China, and the numbers rose to the hundreds of thousands after a typhoon in August of that year. These are only a few of the tragic events that were shaping the social temperature of 1975, a year that undoubtedly yearned for the joyful beats that “Ding-A-Dong” delivered.
The social-political climate was also the inspiration for the band’s name. A “teach-in” was an informal lecture and discussion on a subject of public interest, or an extended meeting held to raise awareness or express a position on a social-political issue.
Teach-In eventually disbanded in 1980. Over the years, various members pursued solo careers, and the band has occasionally reunited for special performances. To this day, Teach-In remains a notable part of Eurovision history and is remembered for their infectious melodies and vibrant stage presence.
